Sutra Neti

The cotton thread for Sutra Neti can be obtained from any yogashrama. This is to be done in the morning after brushing the teeth.

Sit down on your feet and raise your neck a little. Wet the cotton thread and put the waxed-end in that nostril through which the breath is passing. When it reaches the throat, catch it with your third and fourth fingers and bring it out through your mouth. Repeat this process with the second nostril also. After practicing this for a few days, rub it giving a few jerks by holding the two edges of the thread from the nostril and the mouth. Take it out through your mouth. Take care to wash the thread properly after use, so that no impurity remains. If Sutra Neti is not available, buy cathadore (rubber tube) of number 4 or 5 from the office of the Yoga Center. In fact, rubber tube is more in vogue these days.

That is, Neti purifies and cleans the skull (fore-head) and confers heavenly insight on the person. It drives away the diseases that appear on the joints of chest and eyes.

Advantages: Neti cleans the skull, improves eyesight, protects the body from the diseases of ear, nose and throat; from cold, headache and deafness of the ear; and from undesirable growth of the nasal bone.

If the rubbing of the thread inside the nose causes any burning sensation or if blood oozes out of the nose, put a few drops of ghee in both the nostrils. Usually one should also put a few drops of ghee in the nostrils before going to bed at night, and inhale them in. This practice is very useful.
