Cleaning Teeth and Bathing

Most people clean their teeth in the morning only and that too with a tooth-paste and brush.

One must, of course clean one’s teeth in the morning; but cleaning them before going to bed is most essential, because food particles left in the teeth rot in the mouth during the night and spoil our teeth and gums. The ideal way is to clean the teeth with a neem twig (datun) in the morning and with a toothpaste and brush at night. One must learn the proper method of brushing one’s teeth; improper brushing can do more harm than good. The children should also be encouraged to develop the habit of brushing their teeth before going to bed. Scratching them with a pin or a hair pin can be very injurious. Chewing provides exercise to the teeth. Therefore, one must chew one’s food properly.

Bathing

It is also very essential to take bath daily with fresh water. Our skin provides an outlet to the internal impurities of our body. It is of utmost importance to keep the skin clean and pores of the skin open, so that the passage for the removal of impurities remains open and clean. Bathing is also an art.

Throwing a few mugs of water on the body is not bathing. Before bathing, one should rub or massage one’s body gently, to produce heat. While bathing, the body should be rubbed thoroughly. It is not essential to use soap daily. After the bath, the body must be dried properly with a towel. Some people wear clothes on wet body, which is not proper. It is better to dry one’s body in the sun after cleaning it with a towel. It would be much better if the body is warmed also in the sun before bathing.

One must always take bath with fresh water. Hot water bath makes the skin weak. It is also not so refreshing as compared to fresh water. If the fresh water is not available from a pump or a well or if it is severe winter, then one should heat the water to bring it to the temperature of the atmosphere. It is also not advisable to bathe with icy cold water. The advantage of bathing with fresh water is that it helps to bring the blood circulation up to the skin. It therefore imparts activeness and freshness to the body and the mind.
